Since the Rana Plaza tragedy, the RMG sector has gone through various transformations and improvements to ensure workers' rights and safety with the help of national and international communities. Despite this, what is missing from the broad picture are the driving forces behind the industry themselves: the workers. Made in Equality, a youth-led project that began its journey in 2016 in association with C & A Foundation, carries the virtuous mission of telling stories of the Bangladeshi RMG sector through digital media.
“Our aim is to bridge the gap between the consumers and workers. The stories we have are told from the viewpoints of the workers, which in turn creates personalised images, rather than a faceless collective workforce,” says Mehbish Jahan, who serves as Project Facilitator of the initiative.
Made in Equality's main website and social media platforms feature stories and photographs of garment workers or individuals who are or were associated with the RMG sector in Bangladesh. Interviews and photographs for these stories are taken at the homes or workplaces of the workers. Monoshita Ayruani, Project Lead of Made in Equality, says, “Our project is a great opportunity to transform how the local and global audience perceive garment workers, factory managers, and others, and can lead to public advocacy on their behalf and greater consideration by consumers of their role in the garment industry.”
Furthermore, Made in Equality has received around 4.5 million engagements and 3.8 million clicks from 11 million users on Facebook. The project has also won the “Best Use of Social Media in Marketing” award at The Golden Globe Tigers 2017 for Excellence and Leadership in Branding and Marketing and the Silver award for Best Content Marketing at the Digital Marketing Awards 2017.
This initiative has currently become the only platform now with real stories told by real people in the RMG sector, giving everyone the opportunity to take a closer look into the lives of the makers of their clothes. On a broader scale, the team behind Made in Equality hopes to create an impact on the stakeholders and decision makers, so that they create better provisions and work environments and a system that allows the RMG industry to sustain it.
