Police seized venison from an anchored trawler in Chardoani area under Patharghata upazila of Barguna on Wednesday evening.
Sub-Inspector of Patharghata Police Station Md Monir Hossain said police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid on an anchored trawler on Gorakhal (a local canal) and seized 1.5 maunds of venison that was kept in plastic sacks.
“We think that a smugglers' gang brought the venison from the Sundarbans area to sell in the black market,” he added.
The people in the trawler fled when they sensed the presence of the police.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Molla Md Khabir Ahmed said the seized venison was covered with kerosene and kept underground as per instruction of the Judicial Magistrate's Court.
They will take steps against the owner of the trawler in which the venison was found, he added.
