Man sent to jail for abducting Hindu girl

A father of two children  was sent to jail yesterday  on charge of abducting a teenage Hindu schoolgirl in Hatibandha upazila.

Hatibandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC)  Shamim Hasan Sardar said police produced him before the Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent him to jail.

The abductor is Liton Islam, 34, son of Wahed Ali of Sindurna village.

The girl, aged about 13, was rescued by the local people and handed her over to her parents. An abduction case was lodged with the police station  the same night, the OC said.

Shamim said Liton abducted the girl while she was returning home from her classmate's house in the afternoon. He took the girl to a nearby village on a battery-run easybike. Locals caught Liton and handed him over to police.

Victim's father said Liton used to stalk his daughter that he informed the culprit’s family, but no action was taken. “We did not dare to lodge any complaint with the police station against Liton fearing harassment,” he said. “Liton's men are now threatening us to withdraw the case,” he added.

“Police will ensure security to the victim and her family,” the OC said.
