Local people in the municipality on Wednesday demanded exemplary punishment to the people involved in trafficking five children and their godfathers.
A woman and her son were arrested on Monday night on charge of trafficking the children.
They made the demand at a human chain programme in front of the Tangail Press Club.
Local people's representatives, politicians and students of Vivekananda School and College took part in the programme.
They also brought out a procession in the town and submitted a memorandum to superintendent of police in this regard.
Speakers at the rally said the arrested woman and her son had been involved in human trafficking and drug peddling in the area for long in collaboration with a section of local influential people. They demanded exemplary punishment to the duo and immediate arrest of their accomplices.
District Awami League Vice-President Anisur Rahman, Vivekananda School and College Principal Ananda Mohan Dey, ward councillors Hafizur Rahman Swapan and Tanvir Hasan Ferdous Noman, chamber leader Asaduzzaman Moni, Major (rtd) Rezaul Karim and Mamun Khan spoke at the rally.
Detective police arrested Swapna Bhadra, 57, and her son Rana Bhadra, 25, from a house in the Taltala area in the town on Monday night, suspecting them to be members of a child traffickers' ring, police said.
The law enforcers also rescued five children from there.
