A court here yesterday sentenced six outlawed Sarbahara Party men to life imprisonment on charge of killing local Awami League leader Tarek Ali in Jalalpur area of the district in 2005.
Judge Liakat Ali Mollah of Pabna Special Judge's Court pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the absence of the convicts as they are absconding.
The convicted men -- Atik Hossain, 38, Mokbul Hossain, 55, Aslam Uddin, 37, Turi Kana, 50, Shahjahan Ali, 45, and Jamal Hussain, 40 -- hail from different villages of Goyeshpur union in Sadar upazila.
Additional Public Prosecutor advocate Khandaker Ahmed Rakib said the convicts hacked and shot Tarek dead in Jalalpur Bazar area of Pabna Sadar upazila on February 26 in 2005.
Victim's brother Harun Khan filed a case with Pabna Police Station, accusing 11 outlawed party men.
“The court convicted six accused, while two were acquitted,” Rakib said, adding that the remaining two died in crossfire earlier while another was not named in the charge sheet.
