President Abdul Hamid yesterday urged all to forge a unity and remain alert against the influence of money and muscle power in elections.
“People will exercise their franchise by electing the representatives of their choice, but they must elect efficient candidates,” he said.
The president was addressing a programme at Katiadi Pilot Model High School in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj, marking its 70th anniversary.
He said public leaders have immense responsibilities to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level while people have the key task of choosing competent candidates in elections.
Abdul Hamid said, “Tolerance, mutual respect and strengthening all democratic institutions help flourish democracy.”
He also called upon all to make the unity stronger to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War and face the conspiracies of anti-independence and anti-state elements.
The president said all, irrespective of party affiliations, opinions and castes, must come forward together against militancy and terrorism.
He advised students to gain knowledge, practise honesty and be brave to become world-class citizens.
Earlier in the day, the president laid the foundation stones of several development projects in Katiadi upazila.
