Ban on Hilsa Fishing

143 fishermen jailed in Barisal in four days

A total of 143 fishermen were jailed for different terms in Barisal Division in last four days (from October 7 to 10) for defying the ongoing ban on hilsa fishing, according to the fisheries department.

The 22-day ban on catching and selling hilsa for safe spawning of the fish started on October 1.

Meanwhile, the department conducted 185 mobile court drives, seized 1,770kgs of hilsa, fined fishermen a total of Tk 2.73 lakh and destroyed 6.65 lakh metres of nets.

The fisheries department with the help of upazila administration, police and Coast Guard Bangladesh conducted the drives in the Kalabadar, Kirtankhola, Arial Kha, Meghna, Bishkhali, Tetulia, Sandhya and Sugandha rivers.
